We sequence the DNA
Culture based tests can only identify fungi that grow on agar media. ERMI and HERTSMI-2 tests only identify 36 and 5 species, respectively. We identify up to thousands of fungal and bacterial species with phylogenetic barcoding. This is the only technique that can identify all species of microbes.
